Eating Disorders

There are several psychological disorders in which normal eating patterns break down. These include:

1 Anorexia nervosa. This is characterized by severe weight loss as a result of avoidance of food and fear of being overweight. It most often affects adolescent girls and young women.

2 Bulimia nervosa. This is characterized by bouts of gross overeating, usually followed by self-induced vomiting and/or large doses of laxative drugs. It often follows a period of anorexia nervosa and most sufferers are women between the ages of 15 and 30 years.

Treatment for both conditions includes supervision of eating habits, psychotherapy and antidepressant drugs.
